Living Room Start

I've been struggling with the decor of our new living room.  I know I need a starting point and the couch has been one for a while but recently we've changed our mind on the couch a bit and the color.  I've also struggled with incorporating a strange design element in this living room and have come to the conclusion that I am better off not keeping it and trying to base the colors on it.  I do not have a picture of this strange little idea but to describe it; the owner cut a blue, pink, cream combo oriental rug down to a 5x4 insert into the cream carpet in front of the fireplace as a protective element.  So, without replacing all of the carpet I need to find a complementary piece to place here.  Shouldn't be too hard but it took me this long to decide on a rug and couch...

Charcoal velvet couch with loose cushions.  Covers a multitude of toddler sins and since we already have a charcoal couch I'm comfortable with the flexibility it gives us with accent colors.

I've never met a metallic accent piece I didn't like... love gold.  Also, the house has shiny brass door knobs and hardware so I'm hoping that these lamps help tie this in a bit.  Also, I'm looking for gold hardware for the kitchen cabinets to glam up the painted cabinets.

I have been so so SO indecisive about the rug until I saw this one.  I've stalked rugs and nothing has gotten me excited until I saw this one.  It's the neutral I know I need in here but it is thick, graphic and incorporates the warm tones and the grey of the couch.  It's PERFECT.  Ordered and will arrive the day we close.  Even more perfect.

Here is the piece I have not purchased yet and worry that if I don't get it by the end of today it will be gone.  I want to place it in front of the fireplace as extra seating.  The fireplace surround is a gorgeous pink and grey marble and this pulls the pink out without being too pink.  I'm wondering if this is too much shine for the room though.  Velvet, gold lamps, the rug obviously has some sheen... We'll see what else I come up with.

The walls are currently a light tan and I'm not a huge fan but also do not feel like painting that room immediately.  The dining room is a light cream and I'm keeping it that way.  Kitchen will be painted, master bedroom and guest bath so the tan will stay for now.

The pop of color in this room will be with pinks and turquoise.  This is a TERRIBLE picture of the vases but it is all I have at the moment.  You can't see the beautiful pink that I'm pulling from them and the fireplace will complement... it will work, it will.

You're probably wondering what John thinks about all of this.  I recently shared with him that he has absolutely no say in the decor of the house with the exception of the paneled den.  I'm not mean, I'm being honest.  Therefore I will have pink and turquoise in the main living room and I'm pumped.  No stuffed hunting trophies in SIGHT.

I can't wait to put this room together and show the final product!!  Next challenge is art.  I have some ideas and hopefully can execute them.
