Home Office

My house is officially a disaster zone.  We have carpet on our stairs and second floor that is long overdue for replacement and finally managed to choose a carpet, provider and date for the big change.... today.  Sunday, John and I, with the help of our brother-in-law Brady, moved the furniture downstairs or into the master bathroom and every other little thing I have managed to squeeze into our second floor is placed somewhere else on our first floor.  Talk about stressful to have so much clutter.  I am a stickler for everything being in its place and to have random lamps, vases, pictures, chairs, dressers and so on placed haphazardly around our house is causing me a small amount of panic.  Not to mention that our mattresses are now placed in the middle of our small living room made up into a bed for John and I the next couple of nights.  Annnnyways the end result is wonderful new carpet that no one has used, a cat hasn't died on and puppy paws have not graced yet.

Another great piece of fun is John has decided to not put the desk we had in the loft area back up there.  He thinks it takes up too much space and wants that area open.  Well I am not going to let a perfectly good loft go to waste by being an empty space so I am offering to buy another smaller piece of furniture to serve as my desk and hopefully find a neat daybed to place there for guests since Ann is taking our guest room.  As long as I can find this piece of furniture cheaply I'm sure John will be fine with it.  I love home offices and wish I could go all out but know that this is a multi-use space as well as a landing that leads to both bedrooms so it cannot be cluttered or full of stuff.  All we really need is a desk or table for the computer, a small filing system and maybe a bookshelf.  Ann will probably use this area for playing also since we are no longer allowing the dogs upstairs after tomorrow's carpet installation.  (Can we have a moment of silence for this huge change in our puppies' lives and mine?).

I love the classic parsons table as a desk but have also come across this picture that I fell in love with.  This might be a fun alternative to the classic desk and in another house in the future we could use it as a small breakfast table.

Here is a small parsons desk, I don't want anything huge so I'm considering this size rather than the traditional desk size.  Leaning towards the tulip table though after seeing examples of this size parsons desk in spaces...almost too small?

This is a replica of the saarinan table that Ikea has come up with... I can't afford a saarinan table or let me rephrase, I will not pay that much for a white mid century design table that I can find for $50 at Ikea and that John will most likely not like anyway!

Then there is this look I came across and is a completely different direction than the ones above.  I love the desk color and the vintage feel of the whole space which would contrast nicely with our white walls up there.

So, what to do?  I'm going to a wonderful mid century vintage furniture store tomorrow to see if they have a desk that will work so I don't have to order one and most likely assemble it.  This also makes me want to change out our curtains but I will control myself and focus on the desk, chair and possibly an area rug to add some more color since I have black and white photographs and pen and ink drawings on the wall (also three turkey fans and beards but I try to ignore those).

If you have any great ideas pass them on to me!
