I'm finally getting around to uploading a picture of our miniature dining room/breakfast room/catch-all boots, hats and John gear room.
When we moved in, this room was painted what I believe is not a bad yellow. I like bright colors and was excited to come into a house that was not taupe everywhere with no excitement. Take my word that this house does not lack in color. We have the wood floors throughout downstairs and no popcorn ceilings! Sold! You're looking into this room from the open living area. Around to the left is the kitchen. The window looks out over our large back deck and to the right is a set of french doors that John won't let me put drapes on because, the horror, of having to deal with the drapes while opening the one french door we use.... oh well. Some battles are not worth fighting.
I've mentioned my idea in the past of what I want to do to the walls. I have two options:
1. Paint the yellow an off white color and stencil in a metallic and modern pattern on one or all three of the dining room walls.
2. Leave the yellow and stencil a pattern in an off white on top of the yellow using a high gloss paint to contract the eggshell finish we have, add texture and lighten up the deep yellow with the heavy navy. I'm not changing the drapes or the chairs because I love the blue and obviously my rug has a lot of blue and coral. The seats of the other chairs are covered in a chartreuse fabric with tone on tone polka dots. Love color, love pattern and love eclectic. Can ya tell? I promise all of those colors are in the rug and I didn't just pull randomness from the fabric store and throw up in my dining room. If you'll notice the pretty bowl on the buffet... it pulls the yellow and green from the rug and makes them a little more relevant. The coral matches the living room wall color.
So, let me know which plan you think would be best! The metallic stencil is more formal and probably would alarm some potential home buyers in the future... the yellow and cream I feel is more contemporary and fun and also a little unexpected. Plus it's less work to just stencil over the existing wall color and the less painting I have to do the happier our little family is.
Here is another picture of our dining room showing the HIDEOUS light fixture that I will someday replace with something I like enough to buy. For now I hope the fact that I don't even acknowledge it or turn it on makes it disappear. We'll pretend that.
